Eurotunnel terminal turbines start turning

FRANCE: More than six years into the permitting process, three Enercon 800kW turbines will this month* finally start turning beside the Eurotunnel terminal at Coquelles, near Calais.

The original application, submitted in 2003 by local French developer InnoVent, in association with Canadian company Boralex, was for 10MW (Windpower monthly, June 2003).

However, the authorities eventually decided the site could only safely support 2.4MW. Boralex later dropped out and the plant is now owned 85% by InnoVent and 15% by Ventis, another local developer.

InnoVent itself is now owned 40% by the large American power company AES Corporation. To date InnoVent has developed 143MW of operating capacity, has 145MW fully permitted and 414MW awaiting consent.
