Japanese trade ministry hold talks ahead of renewables purchase

Japan's ministry of economy trade and industry (METI) held a hearing with renewable energy industry associations, including the Japan Wind Power Association, at the end of November in preparation for the government's planned introduction of mandated purchases of renewable energy.

About half of the 120 submissions tabled at the meeting indicated support for the government's policy, while the other half were opposed. Parliamentary secretary Kondo Yosuke stressed the importance of balancing the promotion of renewable power on the one hand with the stability of the grid and the financial burden on consumers on the other.

The government plans to investigate systems in use overseas before making a final decision by March.
