Australian politicians veto Rudd's CPRS plan

AUSTRALIA: In a major defeat for Australian Prime Minister Rudd, opposition politicians have again blocked his Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS), based on the carbon emissions trading programme.

The continued uncertainty over the CPRS is disrupting investment decisions, says the Clean Energy Council, which represents the wind industry.

The bill did not survive the opposition Liberal Party leadership change to climate-change sceptic Tony Abbott. Green politicians also voted against, saying environment minister Penny Wong would use it to create carve-outs for heavy industry.

The government will reintroduce the legislation into the senate in February. The Liberal Party has not yet announced a new policy position.
