Wind Wire: Acquisition

Enel Green Power, the renewable energy division of Italian utility Enel, has acquired majority stakes in two authorised wind farm projects with a combined capacity of 64 MW in the southern Italian region of Calabria.

The stakes were acquired from Italian renewable energy group Micropower for an undisclosed sum. The first wind farm in Calabria is a 56 MW facility in the municipalities of Maida and Cortale, while the second, an 8 MW project, is sited in San Floro. Both wind farms are due to be operational in 2010. Enel has recently begun focusing on building a wind portfolio in Calabria, currently one of Italy's hottest regions for wind projects. Earlier in 2009, it unveiled a 50-50 joint venture with Japanese developer Eurus for the development of up to 400 MW of projects in the region.
