Wind Wire: Romania follow-up

GE 2.5 MW machines are being used for the first phase of the facility, which has a planned capacity of 600 MW, but the follow-up order for its turbines had not been guaranteed. After acquiring the project from American developer Continental Wind Partners late 2008, CEZ had opened up to tenders for the turbine supply agreement for the second phase of the project at the Cogealac site. The Czech utility is investing EUR1.1 billion in the wind farm, which is based in Romania's Dobrogea region in the south-east. According to GE, the wind farm should provide electricity for more than 400,000 households. CEZ says that phase one of the project should be completed in the first part of 2010, and the entire wind farm is expected to be finished in 2011. Once completed, Fantanele-Cogealac is expected to be the largest onshore wind installation in Europe.
