Wind Wire: Baltic boost

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is acquiring a 35% stake in Estonian wind developer Freenergy for EUR18.85 million.

In doing so it is supporting the company's plans to complete the development of its portfolio of 15 wind farms totalling 330 MW in the Baltic states, it says.

Eleven of the plants are in Estonia, three in Lithuania and one in Latvia. Five are already operational, with combined capacity of 48.5 MW. The 15 projects will nearly triple wind power capacity in the region upon completion, says EBRD.

Estonian utility Eesti Energia has inaugurated its 39 MW Aulepa I wind farm in Laane County in western Estonia, bringing the country's total installed capacity to 117 MW. Aulepa I uses 3 MW turbines from Finnish Windwind and is the largest installation in the Baltic countries.
