Wind Wire: Going big scale

American turbine manufacturer GE Energy is supplying 57 of its 2.5 MW machines to Swedish wind project developer Arise Windpower.

Five units are being installed at the Brunsmo project near Karlskrona, in southern Sweden, and a memorandum of understanding has been signed for the delivery of the remaining 52 wind turbines. Brunsmo will be the first use of GE's 2.5 MW machines in the Nordic region, says the US firm. The turbines will be assembled at the company's factory in Salzbergen, Germany. GE also has orders for the 2.5 MW machine from Romania and Turkey, and more than a hundred units have been installed across Europe, it says. Arise is hoping to commission 300 large turbines by 2014 and says the GE machines are key to its goal.
