Trading house Itochu Corp and steel maker NKK Corp plan to start operation of their first wind plant in the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido in February 2002. It will consist of 28, 750 kW Lagerwey turbines for a total capacity of 21 MW (Windpower Monthly, December 1999). This is about one-third of the original 60 MW planned for Horonobe town. The local municipal government and several local companies are investors in the consortium which will own the wind farm. They will sell the electricity to Hokkaido Electric Power Co.
