TrustPower has gained consent to proceed with 31 of 40 proposed turbines for the stage three expansion of its Tararua wind farm of Vestas turbines near Palmerston North. The additional machines, rated at 3 MW each, are expected to be online by late 2006 and will bring the wind farm to an installed capacity of 93 MW, making it the largest in the country. Nine of the turbines originally planned were rejected because of potential adverse visual effects arising from their close proximity to adjoining properties. Vestas was required to undertake gearbox retrofits of its 660 kW turbines installed at the exposed Tararua site.
