Sub station upgrade connects Douro region to national grid

Portugal's grid operator, Rede Eléctrica Nacional (REN), is investing EUR 15 million to upgrade the Carrapetelo sub station so more wind energy produced in the Douro Region can be connected to the national grid. The sub station has been operational since 1973 and already connects to the 112 MW Arada/Montemuro wind farm. The upgrade will connect four smaller wind developments (Aveloso, Carvalhosa, Picão and Arada) through the sub station. The 56 turbines making up the projects have a combined capacity of 112 MW. REN is also planning a new EUR 19 million sub station at Armamar. If it proceeds, it will increase the capacity of the wires for cross border exchange of electricity with Spanish network Red Eléctrica de España.
