Small turbine test underway
1 March 1999
Testing of a prototype 20 kW turbine, installed at the site of its manufacturer at Ryton, Tyne and Wear, is underway. The Gazelle-as the machine is named-began operating in December. It was designed by Garry Jenkins of North Energy Associates, who built it in collaboration with MKW Engineering Ltd. The three-bladed machine is 15 metres to hub height with a 10.2 m diameter rotor. It will remain at MKW's factory site while any initial teething troubles are sorted before longer term testing at the NEL test site in East Kilbride. Jenkins believes the unit will fill a market niche for small business, schools, and so on.
