Gust of new business to quiet shipyard
1 May 1998
Vestas has asked the Kockums shipyard in Malmö to build a tower for its 1.5 MW turbine. The fading fortunes of the ship building industry means Kockums has a lot of space and capacity for spin-off production projects, explains Bernt Alexandersson from Vestas Sweden AB. If Vestas is satisfied with the job, Kockums will probably be awarded contracts for further towers for Vestas 1.5 MW machines erected in Sweden and possibly other markets. Vestas and Kockums have also begun collaborating to develop methods and equipment to transport and install offshore turbines and their foundations. Initiatives such as these, which create new job opportunities, are expected to strengthen the political support for wind power in Sweden, one market analyst reports.
