California utility SCE first to respond to RPS issuing tenders
The utility with the most renewables in California is also the first to respond to the state's tough new renewables portfolio standard (RPS) (Windpower Monthly, October 2002). Last month, Southern California Edison (SCE) released a tender for enough renewable energy to ensure it meets the state's RPS requirement for an annual 1% net increase. With 15% of its energy already coming from renewables, SCE has the least distance of the three investor-owned utilities governed by California's new law to reach the target of 20% renewables by 2017. SCE is the only utility that supported the legislation, says power producers have already expressed interest in supplying nearly 2000 MW, 15 times more than it seeks.
