Japanese citizen group's turbine on-line

The first wind turbine to be founded by a citizen group in Japan is now on-line. The Bonus 1 MW turbine at Hamatonbetsu Town in the northern island of Hokkaido is owned by the Hokkaido Green Fund. It is expected to generate 2.6 million kWh annually with the electricity being sold to the local utility company, Hokkaido Electric Power Co. The ยด238 million project was jointly financed by a combination of bank loans and money collected from the 1200 members of Hokkaido Green Fund, which was established two years ago. The group is likely to invest in more wind turbines, but has no plans for the moment. The local utility will decide how much wind electricity it will target once it begins buying electricity from the turbine in March.
