The federal wind research and development budget for fiscal year 1998, which started on October 1, is receiving funding of $33.03 million, the first increase in wind programme funding for three years. It is 14% higher than the $28.9 million authorised for the previous fiscal year. Language that would have blocked using the wind funding for "incremental improvements" in existing design was removed, a victory for the American Wind Energy Association. The Senate had proposed a budget of $34.6 million for wind, while the House of Representatives proposed $32.4 million. The final funding is almost $0.5 million closer to the proposal by the House.
