A new company, Wind Energy Corp Pty Ltd, has been formed to develop wind projects in Australia using expertise from utility Western Power Corp and Enercon Power Corp of Australia. Western Power is Western Australia's main electric utility and brought Australia's first commercial wind farm at Ten Mile Lagoon on-line in 1993 and a new 22 MW plant at Albany on-line last month (above). Enercon Power was formed by German wind turbine maker Enercon together with stand-alone power station specialists Powercorp Pty Ltd of Darwin to market, install and service Enercon turbines in Australia. Wind Energy Corp plans primarily to develop wind projects, with several prospects in Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. Long term, the company hopes to build Enercon turbines or components in Australia, depending on local market growth and viability.
