French firm Vergnet to build Fiji's first grid connected wind plant
1 September 2005
French wind turbine manufacturer Vergnet is to build Fiji's first grid connected wind power plant for the Fiji Electricity Authority. The 10.175 MW development will consist of 37, 275 kW turbines. Vergnet, which specialises in manufacturing small, dismountable wind turbines for hurricane zones, will oversee the project and supply the machines. The company will subcontract the civil engineering works to local companies and will train nearby villagers to carry out the necessary basic maintenance work. The plant should be completed by September 2006. Fiji has pledged to meet all its energy needs from renewable resources by 2011. The first wind plant is expected save the country some $2.5 million in foreign exchange per year in avoided oil purchases.
