Energy research must give centre stage to renewables, efficiency and energy saving technologies, according to Green party parliament member Hans-Josef Fell. Proposing a new energy policy, Fell calls for a larger budget and more research into new materials for use in the renewables sector -- such as for wind turbine blades. He also suggests a stop to nuclear fission and fusion research except for nuclear safety and radioactive waste disposal. Fell appears to have the full backing of Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, who declared, "It's clear to me and to the government that the offensive we need for climate protection, sparing use of resources and employment, will only succeed if we make determined use of renewable energies and energy saving."
