The Welsh Assembly has intervened after a local authority decision to approve a 20 MW wind farm in south Wales. Merthyr Tydfil councillors had voted 18 to 12 in favour of National Wind Power's application for 16 turbines on Gelligaer Common, going against the advice of their planning officer for refusal. Environment minister in the Welsh Assembly, Sue Essex, called in the application and may yet decide to call a public inquiry. Essex is a former member of government quango the Countryside Council for Wales which has opposed most wind projects to date.
