Gearing up to bolster electricity transmission security

With an estimated $0.6 million lost every hour due to power theft, ailing State Electricity Boards are gearing up to bolster the security of their transmission and distribution systems. In some states, losses due to theft are as high as 50%. In Andhra Pradesh 70,000 people have been caught stealing power and fined a total of $9 million. In West Bengal, the first state to introduce such laws, some 800 people have been jailed for tapping into electricity lines.
