Spanish environmentalists attacked wind power development in Galicia last month, complaining that impact reports did not reflect the true situation in the northwestern region. In a letter to the regional ministry for industry, the Sociedade Galega de Historia Natural (SGHN), they said that an 11 volume study carried out by prospective wind developer, Gamesa Eolicos, which partners Danish Vestas, was "mediocre and not up to standards expected." The organisation also demands an explanation into why Gamesa was requested to execute the report and not an independent company. Gamesa Eolicos has been given the go ahead by the regional government to develop 22% of the 600 MW the company originally requested. Galician authorities have approved the construction of 2500 MW of wind plant in the area by foreign and domestic companies.
