Research budget down, demonstration budget up

The Japanese New Energy Development Organisation (NEDO) is awarding ´1.61 billion ($16 million) for field tests for wind energy projects in 2000, a 36% drop from last year's amount. The subsidy budget for construction of alternative energy plants, however, which includes wind farms, is now ´17.9 billion, a rise from ´16.1 billion last year. In this category, NEDO is reviewing applications for wind farm construction subsidies and the results are expected to be announced in July. Applications for field test subsidies are still being accepted.
