A totally sustainable town is to form part of a European building industry fair to be held in Malmö in 2001. A new residential district will be built at the city's Vastra Hamnen (Western Harbour) in time for the opening of the fair. Residential blocks, housing some 1000 apartments, will demonstrate how a city can become sustainable. Total energy consumption will be 10,000 MWh, 6500 MWh for heating and 3500 MWh electricity. The residential area will be self sufficient with energy from renewables. A 1.5 MW wind turbine will produce all the electric power. It will be sited offshore in the Öresund, where it is expected to produce some 5000 MWh. From this output, 1700 MWh will be used to run a heat pump. Together with solar collectors it will produce all energy needed for heating. Malmö city has applied for support from a government fund for ecological development. A final decision on the application.
