Two recent public opinion surveys in Germany reveal that customers are more than willing to pay extra for electricity generated from renewable energy sources. In a survey for utility RWE Energie, the Forsa public opinion research institute found that four out of five customers were ready to pay a 1% premium on their electricity bills -- or around DEM 10 per household per year. Almost two thirds said they would pay an additional DEM 10 per month or more for clean electricity. A similar survey by the Aachen solar energy association confirms these results. It also reveals that 59% of those asked thought an additional charge to support the development of renewable energy should be automatically included in all electricity prices, while 28% thought such a charge should be voluntary
