Canada's federal government has awarded Quebec-based Energie PGE a repayable contribution of C$375,000 to start up the Gaspé region's first small wind turbine manufacturing facility. The SADC de Rocher-Perce, a federally funded local economic development corporation serving the region, will also contribute C$225,000 to the C$3 million project from its investment fund. The facility, which is set to employ 30 people in its first year and an estimated 100 within five years, will manufacture Energie PGE's 35 kW turbine, mainly for export to developing countries. "The wind energy sector is at the heart of Canada Economic Development's priorities of action because of its potential to stimulate the growth of the region," says Economic Development Minister Jacques Saada.
