Siemens has won the contract to supply turbines to RWE npower -- UK arm of major German utility RWE AG -- for its Rhyl Flats wind farm off the north Wales coast. Siemens will install and commission 25 of its 3.6 MW turbines giving a total capacity of 90 MW, with a five year agreement covering service and maintenance. Offshore construction was due to begin at the end of last month, with first turbines to be installed in 2008. The wind farm is expected to be completed by mid 2009. "This order strengthens our position as the leading supplier of offshore wind turbines for the European market," says Andreas Nauen, head of Siemens PG Wind Power division. He adds that Rhyl Flats is already the fourth offshore project Siemens is supplying in Great Britain. At its first, Burbo Bank off Liverpool to the east of Rhyl Flats, Siemens has just completed installing all 25 turbines. The wind farm is due to be commissioned by the end of the year.
