Danish wind turbine manufacturer Nordex has opened an office in Rio de Janeiro in efforts to secure a share in the country's expected wind boom. If it can secure 50 MW confirmed orders a year it would consider setting up a local production plant, regional sales manager Ulrich von Eitzen says. Until then it will import turbines to meet demand. Whether demand picks up or not "depends on regulatory certainty, and right now there's nothing certain," he says. "The potential is so amazingly big here, and the wind and hydro regimes complement each other very well," adds Von Eitzen. He feels the potential could lead to the creation of a strong local manufacturing sector.
