Spanish wind industry heavyweight Gamesa has bought 99.8% of gear box manufacturer Echesa SA. Based in the Basque region like Gamesa, Echesa designs, builds and supplies gear boxes for wind turbines and for other industries. Its main involvement in wind has been as lead supplier to Spanish Made turbines. Gamesa's wind turbine manufacturing wing, Gamesa Eólica, has not used Echesa technology to date, but Gamesa declares it will become Echesa's main customer, with the goal of turning the gear box company into one of the world's leading suppliers for wind turbines. The purchase represents a strategic reinforcement of Gamesa's wind activities, says company CEO Iñaki López Gandásegui. It will enable Gamesa to acquire a deeper knowledge of gear box technology, important to the plant maintenance side of Gamesa's business. Gandásegui adds that Echesa has a good record in producing gear boxes for 600 kW and 1.35 MW turbines. Echesa was already in the process of expansion prior to Gamesa's bid, having built a second production plant in the Basque Country last year. Echesa also owns 90% of Galician gear box manufacturer Transmisiones Eólicas de Galicia, which now goes over to Gamesa. Echesa will continue to operate as an autonomous unit serving other customers as well as Gamesa.
