More drought panic as protestors threaten to destroy turbines
1 July 2004
A group pushing the idea that wind turbines can cause drought are now threatening to destroy more than 1700 turbines in the Satara district near Pune where its members come from. To counteract the publicity given to the group, the wind industry has had to fight back with TV awareness campaigns and roadshows. An expert committee has also been formed to investigate whether the claims have any validity. It consists of members of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, the Indian Meteorological Department, Aerospace Engineering Department, Indian Institute of Technology, and specialists in cloud physics. Anil Kane of the Indian Wind Energy Association says "the problem is under control."
