Green Mountain Energy Company is connecting the dotted lines between clean wind power and the prevention of lung disease together with the American Lung Association of Texas. The green power marketer, which has been operating in Texas since April 2001, is making a contribution to the association every time Green Mountain signs up a new wind power customer. "While laws and regulations are vital to help control the sources of our nation's air pollution, we believe that direct action on the part of consumers will ultimately have a powerful effect on the way electricity is generated in the future," says Ed Carter, head of the lung association. Over a third of the electricity generated in Texas comes from coal-fired power plants. Over the past five years, Texas-based Green Mountain has signed up about a half million electricity consumers in California, Connecticut, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas and, most recently, New York. It received the Phillip M. Scanlan Environmental Award from Quality New Jersey in November for its contributions to improving the state's environment. New Jersey's state government is buying 12% of its energy from Green Mountain.
