Big order for big machines

Nordex has clinched its first big contract for sale of S77 turbines, a model which came into its stable when it acquired Südwind, a wind turbine maker based in Berlin, in early 1999. The EUR 18 million order for 14 units comes from Dirkshof Verwaltung for a 21 MW plant at Hohen Pritz near Schwerin in Mecklenburg Vorpommern. The machines will use 85 metre towers and Nordex will set up a service station close by to serve Nordex wind stations in the region.

The S77 is a new version of the S70, 1.5 MW turbine and has longer rotor blades (77 metres) for low wind sites. The S70 is built under licence for German engineering company, Pro and Pro, now part of Repower Systems, which was founded in Husum in May through the merger of wind turbine manufacturers Jacobs Energie, BWU and Pro and Pro.

The Hohen Pritz contract follows installation of an S77 on an upland site at Gitschbühl near Schonach in the inland state of Baden-Württemberg. The turbine is sited 1025 metres above sea level in the midst of a wood and came on-line last month. It is expected to generate an annual 2.6 million kWh, or enough electricity for nearly 1000 four person households.
