Wind power turbine developer Zephyr Corporation has teamed up with Toray Industries and 11 other organisations to develop a one kilowatt turbine weighing just 15 kilograms. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has provided subsidies for the project. Designed for the use in homes and schools, it is the lightest wind power system in this class in the world, says Zephyr, and can meet around 30% of a typical household's power needs. It is particularly suited to remote areas without access to the grid, it says. The company is working on a wind-solar hybrid system for households with solar energy company Ecosystem Japan. Two models are planned, both with an output of 400 watts. Sales of 600 units are hoped for the first year, with revenue projected at ´240 million.
