Fire investigation

Fire destroyed the world's first truly offshore wind turbine on November 8. The 220 kW WindWorld machine, more affectionately known as Svante 1, was installed in 1990 on a platform some 200 metres off the fishing village of Nogersund, in Blekinge, southern Sweden. An attempt by the local coast guard to extinguish the fire came too late. Klas Hellgren, who is in charge of Svante at the Karlshamn office of the owner, utility Sydkraft, does not wish to speculate on the cause of the fire. Sydkraft, Swedish energy agency Nutek, WindWorld and the insurance company have initiated a thorough investigation. Although the rest of the turbine is destroyed, the tower seems intact. No decision has yet been made about mounting a new turbine on it.
