Corporación Eólica SA (CESA) plans to install Spain's first 2 MW wind turbine at its 15 MW El Canto wind plant in Burgos, Castile and León. The unit will be supplied by Gamesa Eólica, which has launched its own version of the 2 MW Vestas V-80 via its technology transfer agreement with the Danish company. The ESP 300 million (EUR 1.8 million) extension is pending approval from the regional industry department. CESA's Alvaro Maortua stresses the importance of bigger machines in reducing environmental impact since fewer are needed. In the case of Burgos, which has plans for 695 MW of wind, about 350, 2 MW machines would replace the need for 1050, 660 kW units. CESA is also planning to install 33, 1.5 MW turbines in its latest Burgos project, the 49.5 MW Campo Redondo plant, currently awaiting final approval. CESA has not yet confirmed the turbine supplier.
