Britain's rush for renewables

As the dash for gas ends, the rush for renewables is on. Six months into Britain's green power mandate -- the Renewables Obligation -- electricity retailers are scrambling to sign up wind kilowatts and developers are announcing projects in all directions. The British Wind Energy Association expects 65% capacity growth in the next couple of years. Patience on all sides is required, though, and timely monitoring and adjustment of the rules, if this unique market experiment is to have a chance to fly. Last month's panic about-face by the Netherlands (page 23) is a horror story not to be emulated.
