Go ahead for 160 MW as eleventh wind plant in Victoria

The 160 MW Mount Mercer wind farm, to be located about 30 kilometres south of Ballarat in Victoria, is the 11th wind project in the state to be given the go ahead. Developed by Westwind Energy, the Australian subsidiary of Germany's Westwind, the A$250-300 million project will comprise 64, 2-3 MW turbines. Westwind hopes to start construction in 2008 with a view to full commissioning by mid 2009. Westwind hopes to develop a second project near Ballarat across two sites about ten kilometres apart, one near Elaine and one near Yendon. "The Lal Lal project is estimated at this stage to have around 70 turbines of the 2-3 MW class," Westwind's Tobi Geiger says.
