What the consumer pays

Support for renewable energy cost electricity consumers in England and Wales some £100 million during financial year 1995/6. The money was raised through the fossil fuel levy which is collected from licensed electricity suppliers on power purchases from fossil fuel sources. In total £1105 million was levied on electricity supplies during the year, but the lion's share -- 91% of proceeds -- went to subsidise nuclear power.
