A modal diagnostic truck is now making calls to wind installations to help determine the vibration characteristics of turbines, says Bob Thresher of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Starting with its first stop at Bushland, Texas, in late October, data from the truck will help wind plant operators judge turbine performance. Using the data, designers will also be able to decide what to change in wind turbine design, says Mr Thresher. The computers, plugged directly into a turbine, provide data highly suitable for a dynamics model.
