Plans for national code for wind farm development

Plans for a national code for wind farm development in Australia have moved forward with the establishment of a working group comprising representatives from a cross section of community interest groups, local government and the wind energy industry. Pacific Hydro's Andrew Richards and Brett Thomas of the Melbourne arm of Spain's Acciona represent the wind industry. "While primary responsibility in these matters rests with state and territory governments, there should be a more consistent approach than currently exists across Australia," says federal environment minister Malcolm Turnbull. "Wind power certainly has a role in securing Australia's energy future and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. With the development of a wind code, we are seeking a sensible balance of the relevant economic, environmental and social factors." The code is due to be finalised by the end of the year.
