Too late to enter market as a gearbox supplier
1 July 2007
Companies wondering if there is a good opportunity to get into the wind turbine gearbox business may have already missed the boat, according to Emerging Energy Research's Josh Magee. He told this year's annual American wind conference that his company has spent time tracking gearbox production capacity, present and future. "When you add up all the numbers and look at the various relationships, while individual supply chain constraints within the gearbox community will continue most likely for the next two to three years, we are rapidly approaching the level of capacity where we will have sufficient annual capacity to meet demand. It is a question of who can solidify and secure their supply chain relationships with each subcomponent vendor," he said. The combined maximum production capacity of manufacturing investments made over the last couple of years in North America is considerable, he added. "We are approaching a time where you can very quickly see a potential glut in terms of available turbine supply in the market."
