Energy secretary raps opponents of wind

The UK's Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband has gone further than most ministers in condemning the NIMBY (not in my back yard) tendency of opposing wind farms. The government needs to be saying: "It is socially unacceptable to be against wind turbines in your area -- like not wearing your seatbelt or driving past a zebra crossing," His comments were made at the UK premiere of the film The Age of Stupid which is about the failure to take action against climate change. With ambitious 2020 targets for renewables, the government recognises that wind is crucial in achieving them. Miliband was criticised at the event for considering new fossil-fuelled power stations, such as E.ON's proposed coal-fired station at Kingsnorth, south England.
