Blair switches on to wind

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair made history when he switched on the first grid connected wind turbine to be installed at a school on mainland Britain. Cassop Primary School in County Durham is now completely self sufficient in meeting its electrical needs.

By producing pollution free power, the American made AOC 50 kW turbine, from Atlantic Orient Company of Vermont, not only reduces the school's electricity bill but also serves as an educational tool for Durham schoolchildren. Unused electricity at evenings, weekends, and times of low demand will be sold to Northern Electric and Gas.

The project was pioneered by Durham County Council-one of the UK's more proactive councils in promoting renewable energy-in partnership with Northern Electric and Gas.

Blair said at the ceremony: "I think it is a marvellous thing you have here. We have a duty to care for the world and the environment and we are looking at new ways to create energy. This project shows one way of creating this energy."
