Peter Jamieson from wind energy consultants Garrad Hassanreported on the progress so far of a Department of Trade and Industry backed project to develop an advanced wind turbine. This concept uses an innovatory coned rotor: this is hinged allowing the blades to fold back -- or 'cone', to relieve operational loads and to fold up completely in extreme storm conditions. Jamieson compared the concept with a proven 450 kW design. He claimed that with its projected higher energy capture and lower capital costs, the coned rotor system has the potential to halve the cost of electricity on a site with average wind speeds of 7 m/s.
