York Research is one of three firms pinpointed by a Florida research firm as a "focus stock" for 1997. The stock selections, by Discovery Group Inc, represent publicly traded firms that are tipped as "under-followed" by stock analysts yet which Discovery believes will achieve 100% gains this year. York, an independent energy producer and marketer, also develops wind projects and is involved in a proposal for development of several hundred megawatt of wind power in Alberta, Canada (see page 22). In predictions issued the day after Christmas, Discovery describes York as uniquely positioned to participate in the sector of the rapidly growing energy market now undergoing deregulation. Its 1996 revenues rose 92% to $14.4 million with earnings on stock of $0.35, compared with $0.02 cents a year earlier. This year, York is expected to see revenues of $40 million and earnings of $0.50. The other firms tipped were Kaneb Services, which provides services to the oil industry, and Astrocom, a telecommunications company.
