Government's new green deal

Responding to the international economic slowdown, Irish prime minister Brian Cowen has announced "a new green deal" as part of a framework for a smart economy for Ireland. This would move the country away from fossil fuel-based energy production through investment in renewable energy and an invigorated green enterprise sector while creating green-collar jobs, he says. "The smart economy is also a green economy in that it achieves greater output for fewer inputs and results in a lower reliance on natural resources to drive economic growth," Cowen says.
