Funding is being sought for a wind/diesel project in north east Africa to supply the city of Gao in Mali's Sahara desert area. The Mali energy ministry has applied for support from the German aid organisation Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ). Wind measurements began in March. The aim is to reduce the costs of the existing diesel based electricity generation. A decision will be taken on whether or not to proceed with the project after May 2002, according to GTZ.
