Utility to appeal against 20 MW Awhitu rejection
1 September 2005
Power utility Genesis Energy says it plans to appeal against a decision by Franklin District Council to reject its application to develop the 20 MW Awhitu wind farm. The project was rejected on the grounds of visual pollution, as well as the possible negative impact on a nearby equestrian centre and concerns expressed by the native Maori people (Windpower Monthly, October 2004). Genesis is taking the matter to the Environment Court and is supported in its action by a number of public and private groups. These include the country's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority, Greenpeace, the Environmental Defence Society, and Auckland Regional Council, as well as the New Zealand Wind Energy Association.
