The federal energy department is awarding more than $90,000 to the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) for its Solano County wind farm. The payment, one of seven awards under the first round of the Energy Policy Act's renewable energy production incentive programme, totalled $93,038. Calculated at $0.015/kWh, it is for the six million kilowatt hours produced in the second half of 1994 by the 5 MW wind farm of Kenetech turbines. The incentive programme is to give municipal utilities and electric co-operatives -- which are not eligible for the production tax credit as they are exempt from paying tax -- incentives for using renewables.
