A new research program has been launched by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to fund research into renewables to the tune of £3.5 million a year. The EPSRC has invited outline proposals from academic institutions for research focusing on medium to long term issues. Solar PV and fuel cells have high priority for the council, but projects in the areas of biomass, wind, marine and grid connection are particularly welcome under this first call. EPSRC is the largest of the UK's autonomous research councils, though it is funded mostly through the Office of Science and Technology at the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The EPSRC's Renewable and New Energy Technologies program forms part of the DTI's £43 million of increased research spending on renewables (page 45).
