The wind industry has welcomed a vow by the Australian government to produce a national code for wind power development, announced by federal environment minister Ian Campbell after a round table meeting with the industry and community groups. It is an "important step," says Dominique La Fontaine of the Australian wind energy association, Auswind. "The round table focused on how the industry can best address concerns surrounding wind farm developments. It was not about interfering with the responsibility of state governments to adjudicate on planning issues," she says. Auswind's best practice guidelines, independent accreditation system and its work on landscape assessment will form the basis of a the code. "That is a big vote of approval for the industry," La Fontaine says.
